Green City Solutions: Breathing Air Back into Cities

Published by

Air Design were fortunate to have had a studio workshop with Green City Solutions last March to learn how their revolutionary technology, which revitalises and breathes clean air back into our polluted cities, can be effectively incorporated within the wayfinding and public realm industry.

Their most innovative product is the City Tree which is the world’s first bio-tech filter to quantifiably improve air quality using a surprising superhero... moss.  Whilst creating a vibrant and refreshing green landscape within urbanised areas, moss is also a renewable source, has a cooling effect, absorbs CO2, and releases oxygen and antiseptic properties to combat toxic air pollution. The City Tree filters the air for up to 7000 people in 1 hour, ensures cleaner air for a surface area of 3.5m2 and each one offers the equivalent benefit of 275 trees for reducing pollution.

Our main question was, how can Air Design use this ground-breaking technology in our future designs? We discovered we can integrate this technology into the public realm by creating environmentally tailored, bespoke products whilst also implementing the City Trees. The City Tree is the perfect formula of being a sustainable air purification solution and a contemporary design which contributes to the development of a distinctive and strikingly sculptural landscape.

This innovative technology can also be implemented in our wayfinding designs by collaboratively developing a unique and custom-made product using the superhero material moss. This development is the epitome of science and design working together due to an aesthetically unique design creating a healthier living standard and effective navigation tool for the surrounding community.
